What is a Hybrid System? | Print |

Although definitions can vary depending on the source, most agree that Hybrid Telephone Systems often share the following characteristics:

  • Hybrid systems are commonly defined as being a cross between a Key System and a PBX System. This means the system can be configured to perform like either type. A Hybrid System can be programmed to show all telephone lines on all extension sets, or it can be programmed to receive calls in a centralized area, either by a live receptionist or by an automated attendant, then each call is sent to an extension.

  • In the latter environment, the receiving party most likely has a call button on the phone instead of buttons for all telephone lines. When the station receives a call, the phone rings and the call button lights up, giving the option to pick up the handset or press the call button to answer the call.

  • Many Hybrid systems are capable of receiving T1 Lines that combine up to 24 telephone lines into a single line. For offices with more than a dozen phone lines, this can be an excellent way to streamline services and reduce expenses.

  • This also adds the capability of other services such as Direct Inward Dial (DID) numbers that enable individual users to have calls route directly to their desk by having their own number without paying for a separate line.

  • Hybrid systems offer increased support of other advanced services, including integration with computer networks to facilitate Computer Telephony Integration (CTI) applications. CTI applications enable the use of information in computer systems to enhance the functionality of the phone system.

  • A common example of this is the Screen Pop. When a client calls in to the phone system, the system queries the computer network to determine if a record matches information provided by the caller, or captured in the Caller ID information. If a match exists, the network populates the stations's computer  screen with the caller's information, as the call is taken.
