What is a LAN & Server Based Telephone System?

To answer this question, let's first take a look at a traditional telephone system. Key and Hybrid Systems, as well as larger PBX Systems have two major things in common:

  • Typically, they are manufactured and marketed under a proprietary brand. The end result of this is that future expansions and upgrades of hardware must come from the proprietary manufacturer or its affiliate.

  • Secondly, traditional systems are more reliant upon mechanical and electronic components, also made by the proprietary manufacturer as part of the overall system.

The main difference between LAN & Server Based Systems and traditional systems, is that server based systems are typically built on open architecture and can run on any server built to the specifications required to run the application.

Server based systems also are becoming less reliant on mechanical and electronic components, but the ones they do use are typically offered in a more competitive market, rather than from a proprietary vendor.

A Server based system is the natural evolution of communications and its current direction towards convergence. Although not for everyone, these systems do fill a valuable niche in the market at the present time. Many organizations are seeking the level of computer integration and robust features that many of these systems offer off-the-shelf.
