LAN and Server Telephony Systems | Print |

LAN & Server Based Telephony Systems are more reliable and flexible than ever before. Many applications are available for Small & Medium Businesses, as well as Large Enterprises, Contact Centers, and Technology Companies.

For those not interested in the technological and engineering aspects, understand this: At the end of the day, it's just a different type of phone system. Don't worry too much about the technology end of it. If you have IT and Telecom staff, they'll most likely sweat the details of a particular systems viability for your organization.

Otherwise, that's one of the added benefits of working with a consultancy like BMG Communications. It is not our goal to sell you a particular system. Rather, we intend to analyze your needs and propose systems and services that meet and exceed those needs.

With that said, here is why an organization should consider a LAN or Server Based Telephone System. Good systems in this sector often share these characteristics and capabilities:

  • Although some hardware, such as a server, is required, the bulk of the investment is in the software. Software, as you may know, is often upgradeable. Therefore, if the majority of the investment is in an upgradeable software application, logic dictates a greater ROI compared to investing in traditional proprietary hardware.

  • Additionally, based on software, if the system is also based on Open Architecture, then this is the type of system that allows for greater integration with third party applications, including other hardware and software, resulting in greater flexibility and increased ROI.

  • The overall cost of a system and its integration with third party hardware and software can also be reduced since the peripheral hardware and software can be obtained in a competitive market, rather than requiring this additional functionality to be obtained from proprietary vendors within or affiliated with the phone system manufacturer.

  • A good system runs independently from your core computer network, and still allows for increased integration with the network. Running independently from the network results in increased reliability for the phone system; if the network goes down, the phone system stays up. However, it is wise to integrate the system with the network to take advantage of additional functionality.

Bottom line, if your needs go beyond basic communications, and you are interested in converging systems that offer advanced features for call handling, voice processing, network and desktop computer integration, you owe it to your organization to consider a quality LAN/Server Based Telephone System.

Many of these systems also provide increased support for Voice over IP (VoIP), also known as IP Telephony. Some systems require the use of IP Telephony in order to function. Our experience has indicated that versatile systems are more desirable. We prefer ones that, although server based, still allow for traditional wiring, handsets and access to regular telephone lines and trunks, in addition to the option of running VoIP.
