The other way to approach VoIP delivery is as a service. So, unlike the above example where a customer buys a VoIP enable phone system or components, a Broadband Phone Service is used in addition to, or in replacement of, your regular phone service.

In this example, someone may choose to reduce their line count from the local phone company, and use their Broadband Phone Service to make calls to other office locations to save on excessive long distance calling, or for international calls. Sometimes smaller businesses, that feel they have a stable Internet connection, may eliminate most or all of their regular telephone lines, and completely replace them with Broadband Phone Service.

By doing this, you reduce the amount you pay for phone service in 3 ways. First you reduce or eliminate charges from your local phone company. As a result, you also reduce or eliminate charges from your long distance phone company. Then with the addition of the Broadband Phone Service, you establish a discounted flat rate to handle all your local and domestic long distance calls, while receiving discounted rates to international destinations, if applicable.

For those that are interested, here are some things to consider when getting Broadband VoIP Phone Service:

Benefits:

• Less expensive line charges when compared to local service
• Less expensive long distance charges, most carriers provide unlimited domestic long distance
• Less expensive international rates on average
• Dynamic use of phone numbers, not only can you port your regular number over, so you won't have to change phone numbers (in most cases), but most carriers will also allow you to get alternate numbers for little or no cost at all, so you can have a local phone number in another area, and have it ring to your Broadband VoIP Phone Line
• Take your phone with you. If you take your Broadband VoIP Phone 'box' with you, you can plug it into any broadband Internet connection to make or receive calls from your line, which is much more dynamic than a traditional phone line

Concerns:

• Your phone service is now only as reliable as your Internet connection. So, it is recommended that if you demand highly available phone service (like we're used to in the traditional phone line world), then you should have a reliable Internet connection to support your phone lines.
• If you need to increase your Internet reliability by having a redundant service in place, then keep that in mind when doing your cost analysis.
• If you have several phone lines, keep in mind, the more phone lines you have, the bigger the requirement for bandwidth from your Internet connection. In other words, you might be able to run a phone line or two on a DSL connection, but if you are looking to run several phone lines, you may want to upgrade to something like an Internet T1.
